Course Transcript - And finally, let's take a look at how to create our own materials on the Mac. There are many times when you may not have the exact material you want in the SketchUp library, so if you don't want to edit an existing material into what you want, you can always create something from scratch. We can do that, again, in the Materials window. So If I go into my colors in my model, you'll see that well, I only have one color, which is the default color, and let's go ahead and make a new color.

Now, in the Mac, it's a little bit different than Windows. In the Mac you have to duplicate an existing material. So, if I select this default material, and do Color Duplicate, it will allow me to create a new material. Let's go ahead and just make a material for the legs of this table.

So I'm gonna type in Legs and so now I have this new material which is a copy of the old one. But we can edit this, so if I select this material, and go Edit, I can go ahead and change things. So let's go ahead and just change the color of this. So I'm going to go ahead and select the Color Picker here, and maybe make this kind of a maybe pale bluish-gray kind of color, maybe the color for the metal of the legs. And let's go back over to our Texture Palettes and just press Close. So now I have kind of a gray material here. If I deselect this and reselect it, I should be able to paint my legs that color.

So now we've created one material, but we can also create materials that have textures applied to them. So we can do that either by duplicating the material, or an easier way to do that is go into Color and say New Texture.

Now, in this case, it's going to ask me for a specific texture file. Now in the Chapter Eight folder, I should have one called WoodFloor.jpg. Let's go ahead and open that up, and then it's going to ask me Width and Height, so that's basically the scaling of this. I'm going to leave this at default and let's just see what happens.

So I'm going to select this material, and let's go ahead and apply it to that table top. So that actually looks pretty close, but if I want I can go back and edit it. So make sure this is selected and go Edit and then I can change the scale like we did before, so let's say instead of three feet I want this to be four feet, I can certainly do that, and I can unlock the Aspect Ratio if I want, and now that I have this, I have my texture. Now it's defaulting to the name of the jpg file that you used, but you can always change this, and we can call this, say, Table Top if we want, and then just press Close.

So now we have a new material called Table Top. So, as you can see, it's very easy to create your own materials in SketchUp on the Mac. Practice while you learn with exercise files.
