The rear panel has 4 additional 1/4″ TRS line inputs as well as an 8-channel ADAT Lightpipe connection and a stereo S/PDIF input. The 18i8 also provides MIDI input and output jacks. The Scarlett 18i8 has left and right 1/4″ TRS monitor outputs, a stereo S/PDIF output, and two independent headphone outputs.

It is housed in a rugged and compact unibody metal case to withstand constant use. Change settings with a single slider, from realistic three-dimensional rooms to dramatic and dreamlike halls. Tube Delay is an echo effect that can go from clean to rude by overdriving its three modeled tube stages – delivering everything from realistic room echoes, to rockabilly style slap back, to dub reggae echo. Saturation Knob is a modeled output distortion unit that adds grit and warmth – use it to fatten up bass lines, add some harmonics and shimmer to vocals, or simply destroy a drum loop. Gain Halos Unique LED ring “gain halo” indicators make it clear when you have adequate signal for recording.

Except for a dent on one corner the rest of the unit was flawless. After installing the appropriate drivers from the factory website it fired right up and connected with Reaper effortlessly. What makes the 18i8 so desirable is its ability to get 8 more XLR channels for a total of 12 using the ADAT connection.

If you do alot of remote recording, having this flexibility really is a lifesaver. I'm not an equipment prude. I use Behringer and Korg interfaces too. They all have their purposes and this one is just as awesome! Deceptive specs, poor gain structure. Listed as 18 in, 8 out.

Only 8 inputs are analog, the rest being optical requiring special external gear for use. Of the 8 outputs, 2 are also optical (S/PDIF) and mostly useless. More bothersome to me, of the 6 analog outputs, only two are on standard mono jacks. The remaining 4 are routed as left and right on two headphone jacks.

To use these requires awkward splitter cables (not included). Apart from this kind of deceptive product labeling (which I'm afraid is all too common in audio interfaces), the unit's input gain is low throughout, requiring boosting before input or after (compromising audio quality). I will avoid Focusrite in future.
