ProRes isn't this magical, hard-to-write-an-encoder-for piece of software, Apple just refuses to license to a lot of groups. The reverse engineered solutions work just fine despite the FUD you always hear. I'm currently using HitFilm Express to work on a short film made with a JVC camera that shoots video in the AVCHD format. Thanks to this forum I already know that HitFilm Express does not import Dolby Sound thanks to licensing issues, and that I can use the program EyeFrame Converter to convert my AVCHD videos to a format more suited for editing within HitFilm Express. My question is this: What is the best codec format to convert my AVCHD videos to so that I don't experience a loss of quality, and so that a 40 MB file doesn't grow to a 1 GB file. Thanks in advance! The nature of high quality formats is that the files will get larger. If you want to keep the files small, just know that quality won't be great, and decide how you want to balance that. Is file size or quality most important?
Avid DNxHD contained in.mov files is probably your best option for quality and performance. Quicktime Animation (or ProRes if you are on a Mac) are also excellent options for quality and performance. If its most important to keep the files tiny,.mp4 files will be much smaller, and will perform ok, but quality will suffer. Depending on your needs you may want to simply convert the audio. I've had trouble with the m2ts files from my camera and so tried going down the DNxHD route but the file ended up being 47GB and the HitFilm project takes 2-3 minutes to load, which is a long time when you're just sitting there waiting. For me simply changing the container to mp4 worked but for you, as you've pointer out, AC3 is not supported so you'll need to convert that. You could also try using to convert the AC3 into AAC which I think is supported by the free express version.
For the Video Output select copy, then for Audio Output select AAC (Faac), you can use the filters to convert multi-channel into stereo or Prologic if that suits. For the output select MP4 Muxer or maybe MP4v2 muxer. The conversion should be fast as it's not transcoding the video.
