Apple revealed a new Photos application during the Worldwide Developer Conference earlier this month, which it says will allow users to quickly access their entire library of photos from all Apple devices, instead of just “My Photo Stream,” which is limited to the 1,000 most recent pictures snapped. With Photos, you’ll also be able to keep everything backed up in iCloud, and Apple has already announced a new pricing tier that’s coming in tandem with the Photos launch. While that’s all exciting, The Loop learned on Friday that Apple will sunset its professional photo editing application called Aperture in order to focus on its new Photos app. “With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture,” Apple told The Loop. “When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS.” iPhoto already allows some editing options, though they aren’t as powerful as what Aperture offers. Perhaps Apple will build-in some of those features into Photos.

Keep in mind that Apple said there won’t be any “new development” for Aperture, so the application should still exist as it does today for a long time moving forward, it just won’t receive any new features.

You can take a look at my to get an idea of the capabilities of the new app. I think Photos will be a pretty good replacement for iPhoto users; Aperture users, not so much.: Aperture and Lightroom have long been the top professional photo management apps for the Mac. Many photographers have built their photo workflow using one or the other as the key image management app in their businesses. Lightroom may be a logical direction to move in, but first Adobe will need to come up with a graceful and easy way to migrate Aperture libraries, as well as offer equivalent workflow utilities.
